Interventional Radiology

Pinhole surgery guided by imaging. Using X-ray, ultrasound and CT to see inside the body, our interventional radiologists treat conditions through tiny punctures instead of open surgery — meaning less pain, smaller scars and faster recovery.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Treatment Through a Pinhole

Interventional radiology (IR) is one of modern medicine\u2019s quiet revolutions — treating conditions that once needed major surgery, instead through a needle or thin tube guided precisely by imaging.

Using real-time X-ray, ultrasound or CT to see inside the body, our interventional radiologists perform targeted procedures through tiny skin punctures: taking biopsies from deep organs, draining infected collections, opening blocked vessels or tubes, and controlling bleeding — all with pinpoint accuracy.

Because there is no large incision, patients benefit from less pain, minimal scarring, lower infection risk and much faster recovery — often going home the same or next day. We provide this advanced care at charitable rates, working closely with all departments.

Procedures at a Glance

WHAT WE TREAT

Procedures & Conditions

Image-Guided Biopsy

Taking tissue samples from deep organs (liver, lung, lymph nodes) accurately, guided by CT or ultrasound.

Abscess Drainage

Draining infected fluid collections and abscesses through a thin tube — avoiding open surgery.

Nephrostomy & Catheters

Placing drainage tubes to relieve blocked kidneys (nephrostomy) and other catheter procedures.

Vascular Procedures

Opening blocked or narrowed blood vessels (angioplasty) and treating vascular conditions through pinhole access.

Bleeding Control

Stopping internal bleeding by blocking the bleeding vessel (embolisation) — a life-saving alternative to surgery.

Tumour Procedures

Targeted treatments delivered directly to tumours, in coordination with our oncology team.

Interventional Radiology FAQs

It is ‘pinhole surgery’ guided by imaging. Instead of a large cut, the interventional radiologist uses live X-ray, ultrasound or CT to guide a needle or thin tube through a tiny skin puncture to exactly where treatment is needed — to take a biopsy, drain an infection, open a blocked vessel, or stop bleeding. Less invasive means less pain and faster recovery.

Traditionally, sampling a deep organ might need open surgery. With image guidance, the radiologist places a fine needle precisely into the target through a tiny puncture — accurate, quick, and usually done under local anaesthesia with same-day discharge. It spares you a major operation while still getting the tissue diagnosis your doctors need.

Most IR procedures are done under local anaesthesia, sometimes with mild sedation — you feel little pain, only brief pressure. Because there is no large incision, post-procedure pain is much less than open surgery, and recovery is faster. Your radiologist explains what to expect for your specific procedure.

Embolisation is blocking a blood vessel deliberately — for example, to stop dangerous internal bleeding, or to cut off a tumour\u2019s blood supply. The radiologist navigates a tiny catheter to the target vessel and seals it from inside. It can be life-saving and often avoids major emergency surgery.

Yes. As a charitable hospital, we make these advanced procedures accessible — rates are kept well below corporate centres, and CGHS/ESI/scheme patients are covered per entitlement. Because IR often replaces costly major surgery with shorter stays, it can also reduce overall treatment costs.
